Flexibility Ranks First, Entrepreneurship Last, When Baby Boomers and Active Retirees Seek Retirement Jobs, According to New Survey from RetirementJobs.com

Online Retirement Job Destination Releases What’s In, What’s Out List

Wellesley, MA – June 21, 2006 –According to a new survey released today by RetirementJobs.com, entrepreneurship ranked at the bottom of a list of key job factors baby boomers and active retirees consider for an ideal retirement job. Flexibility or lifestyle integration were ranked as important by 7 out of 10 respondents asked to rate the job factors in describing their ideal retirement job. Just 30% rated entrepreneurship as being important.

“We found that 50+ job seekers place a big premium on flexible work conditions, to the point where they will often trade a suitable schedule for reduced compensation,” said Tim Driver, CEO of RetirementJobs.com. “It probably stands to reason that if someone is after a more relaxing lifestyle, starting a business is not always likely to be a fit.

But let’s not forget there are countless examples of great ventures started by people over age 50.”

RetirementJobs.com research shows that on top of experience, workers over 50 stay in jobs longer, waste less time at work, and relate better to companies’ older customer base. Employers are increasingly luring 50+ workers given that half the U.S. workforce of 130 million people is scheduled to retire, or take a retirement job, in the next 15 years.

Job Factor Percent of Respondents Rating Factor Important
Flexibility or Lifestyle Integration (partial day, week or year) 69%
Security and Stability 67%
Independence and Autonomy 65%
Service and Dedication 58%
Cash Compensation 53%
Technical and Functional 53%
Managerial 48%
Benefits 48%
Pure Challenge 46%
Entrepreneurship 29%

Follow up interviews with respondents enabled RetirementJobs.com’s analysts to identify a qualitative set of likes and dislikes among people in their careers after age 50. To view the “What’s In, What’s Out” list, please visit the URL below:
