BASIC PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is to pre-register and register both inpatient and outpatient services, obtain demographic and financial related data, provide general assistance to the public and perform receptionist and clerical duties as related.
MAJOR WORK ACTIVITIES:
1. Interface courteously and effectively with patients, visitors and staff, in person and by phone, in order to give assistance. Transport patients by wheelchair to ancillary departments and/or nursing units. Answer questions and facilitate a pleasant atmosphere throughout the department.
2. Interview patients to obtain accurate registration related data. When appropriate, screen medical history according to developed criteria. Relay necessary information to patient (i.e. lab time). Make referrals to Financial Counselors as warranted.
3. Utilize the Patient Management computer system to enter data accurately, register and schedule patients, and perform routine inquiries. Obtain signatures, assemble medical records, distribute to correct locations, file/process charts, etc. as appropriate.
4. Interact courteously and effectively with Insurance Companies, Managed Care Groups and other review agencies to obtain precertification and eligibility for services provided.
5. Work with physicians and their office staff to schedule patients.
6. Determine amount of deposit/payment required upon registration and collect payments when appropriate. Generate patient charge information to facilitate point of service collections. Responsible for cash processing.
7. Demonstrate compliance with department guidelines and hospitals commitment to the Corporate Mission and Vision Statement. Regularly attend staff meetings, training sessions and hospital inservices as required.
8. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with physicians, physician office staff, patients, visitors and peers.
2. Basic computer and data entry skills. Ability to type 45 wpm.
3. Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.
4. Ability to read, comprehend and demonstrate effective oral and written communication with patients and their families, regardless of age, education, cultural background.
5. Requires sitting and standing as well as ease of movement throughout the facility.
6. Ability to escort/transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher.
7. Ability to move and lift boxes of paper supplies and/or small equipment weighing less than 50 pounds for registration support.
8. Physical job demands may be subject to possible modifications to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.
9. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
