"Nail-biting is counter-productive," says Tom Worthen of Wareham, Massachusetts. At age 52, the former corporate general manager needed a new job. He'd spent many years in leading corporate consumer products companies. What he got, through buying and running his own company, was satisfaction.

Satisfaction from seeing customers of his design materials company return years later to give him more business, appreciative of the extra effort he'd provided as a small, hungry, start-up.
